"Pill" pollution

We can define it "pill pollution”. Yes, we're talking about just that, the “birth control pill” which, in the last fifty years has modified our sexual behavior and, as a result, the lives of hundreds of millions of people, making it possible to dissociate between sexuality and reproduction. Right now at least 100 million women are using the birth control pill. The problem is that this drug contains ethinylestradiol (EE2), a substance that goes from the waste water directly into rivers and lakes,

Public health crises of the past decade — such as the 2003 SARS outbreak, which spread to 37 countries and caused about 1,000 deaths, and the 2009 H1N1 flu pandemic that killed about 300,000 people worldwide — have heightened awareness that new viruses or bacteria could spread quickly across the globe, aided by air travel.

What if the particle is not the Higgs boson?

The discovery of the Higgs boson is an extraordinary success for modern science and the technology associated with it. It confirms, in particular, the validity of scientific research in theoretical and experimental physics and is a very important step forward in our understanding of the fundamental forces and constituents of nature. It is a great achievement for humanity that some scientists, not only Higgs but also Brout and Englert may have predicted almost fifty years ago, on the basis of exquisitely theoretical considerations, the existence of this

A success for the international scientific community

The results presented today by the ATLAS and CMS experiments at CERN are a step forward of extraordinary importance for our understanding of the Universe. The discovery of the Higgs boson is the culmination of a search that has been going on for more than four decades in order to demonstrate the validity of the theory known as Standard Model of particle physics. This theory fits in the path of a great and powerful unified framework of the fundamental forces

A new approach

Autori:

In April 2011, a group of researchers from the University of Washington described, in a paper published on Science, a computational method for designing proteins able to bind to the surface of a target macromolecule. They obtained a protein that binds a conserved surface patch on the stem of the influenza hemagglutinin from the 1918 H1N1 pandemic virus, thus inhibiting it.

An antidiabetic drug to prevent and cure cancer

An old but effective drug against diabetes can also help in the fight against breast cancer. Probably, if administered to healthy women it can prevent its insurgence. These are the important results of a study on metformin just published on Nature Communication, and conducted by the team of Giovanni Blandino of the National Cancer Institute Regina Elena (IRCCS). In this work metformin exerts some of its antitumor activities by reprogramming the metabolism of a tumor cell.
