Why we have a problem with vaccination coverage

With the winter at the door, influenza epidemics are a problem to deal with. Every year they cause significant morbidity and mortality throughout Europe, especially in high-risk groups such as older people, individuals with chronic diseases, pregnant women and small children. In most of EU/EEA countries, uptake of seasonal influenza vaccination for these more endangered groups fall below the coverage threshold that the European Council of Ministers set at 75%.

Horizon2020 approval: a boost for research and innovation

The European Commission today welcomed the European Parliament's adoption of Horizon 2020, the next EU research and innovation programme. With a budget of nearly EUR 80 billion1 euro over seven years, Horizon 2020 is the biggest EU research programme yet, and one of the biggest publicly funded worldwide. It is also one of only very few programmes in the next EU budget to see a strong increase in funding – a nearly 30 per cent jump in real terms over the current Seventh Framework Programme.

Superbugs: every one is responsible

Step by step, some improvement can be seen in our fight against the so called “superbugs”. The 2013 Eurobarometer survey on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR), published in occasion of the 6th European Antibiotic Awareness Day, shows in fact a positive, even if modest, involution in EU citizens’ use and knowledge about antibiotics since the last survey in 2009: «It means that the process is reversible, but a lot of work still needs to be done» said Tonio Borg, Commissioner for Health at the European Commission.
