Hefei Statement, 10 characteristics of research universities

For the first time, four of the world’s leading research university associations have made a joint statement on the characteristics of contemporary research universities. The four associations -- the Association of American Universities (AAU), the Consortium of China 9 Research Universities (C9), the Group of Eight Australia (Go8), and the League of European Research Universities (LERU) issued the statement at the annual meeting of the C9 universities in Hefei, China.

Stamina and Italian Science Policy: time to change

Reports about stem cell tourism and unproven stem cell therapies abound from all over the world. Over the last year or so, also Italy had its share of pseudo-scientific enchantment for unproven therapeutic promises, as the country has indeed been trapped into a particularly harsh public controversy over the administration of scientifically unproven cell therapies by the now infamous Stamina Foundation. The latter has been offering untested intravenous injections of cellular suspensions to patients – mostly children – affected by all sorts of intractable degenerative diseases.

International Research

Commonly known as “start up nation”, Israel is still leading global scientific research, despite its little population and a serious international situation. This is due to two key-points: first, a competitive R&D investments, which brought high quality to Israeli universities; second, a public driven linkage between scientific research and commercial companies, which produces more investments in R&D. As a matter of fact, Israel has been included in Horizon 2020, the European Union (EU) €80 million funding program as the only non-European State that could join in.
