National Agency for Research: what is there, what is missing

The Italian National Agency for Research is about to be established. Article 28 of the draft budget law for 2020, which will be discussed at the Chambers in the coming days (see below for the text) and by the Ministry of Education, Universities and Research, talks about it. It coordinates and directs the research of universities, public research institutes and bodies. The objectives are dictated by the programming that remains in political hands.

What is a National Research Agency?

What is a National Research Agency? Conduct: A National Research Agency is a national and international research funding and coordination body, independent from the relevant ministries. If we look around, almost every country has at least one. Except for Italy, which has now decided to set it up. This is undoubtedly good news, very good news. And let us, at least for a moment, be pleased that our country will also have a technical structure for the orderly management of research funding according to government directives.

Carnivorous plants can be a source of inspiration for new materials

Carnivorous plants can be a source of inspiration for new materials with specific mechanical properties, according to researchers from the Centre for Complexity and Biosystems (CC&B) of the University of Milan. In a paper recently published on PNAS– and selected for the journal’s cover –they analysed the mechanics by which one of these plants, Drosera capensis, folds its leaves around insects trapped on their sticky surface in order to digest them.

Researchers have found that aberrant protein aggregates responsible for Huntington’s disease have some weak spots that could be exploited to hinder the development of this pathology. The study, published on Scientific Report, has been conducted by scientists of the Centre for Complexity and Biosystems (CC&B) of the University of Milan, in collaboration with colleagues from Penn State University.

Creativity and Human Brain

Creativity is one of the  most fascinating topics in the area of Neuroscience. It has generated  a number of books, including  a two-volume Encyclopedia, and countless essays. The amount of information available has now become enormously  large, and  continues  to grow at an exponential rate: yet, gaps in our  understanding of the process are still conspicuously evident.

Europe health saved by welfare

Mortality trends in Europe have been decreasing in recent years, differently from what happened in the United States with the rise in the so-called “deaths of despair” among low educated middle-aged white Americans. Most of all, such trends in Europe show no interruptions due to the economic crisis. This is the conclusion of a study published on PNAS by LIFEPATH, a project funded by the European Commission, which investigates the biological pathways underlying social differences in healthy ageing.
