Rice: a possible increase

Autori:

The gene which serves to increase rice grain yield by 20% was discovered by a group of Asian researchers along with the support of Italians. The work which was presented in Nature in August confirms the importance of safeguarding the genetic variations which form part of the agronomic species in question which are no longer cultivated. The PSTOL1 gene Phosphorous Starvation Tolerance 1 – has, in actual fact, been isolated from the traditional rice variety named Kasalath, of Indian origin, which grows successfully in soil with low phosphorous

Two sides of the same coin

Everything started at the beginning of September in San Francisco, at the Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial Agents and Chemotherapy, when Dr. Danuta Skowronski, an influenza expert at the B.C. Centre for Disease Control, took the floor to speak about her work. A work that ground its roots during the 2009 flu pandemic, when people who got a flu shot for the 2008-09 winter seemed to be more likely to get infected with the pandemic virus than people who hadn't received a flu shot. Studing the bats life is not that simple. Bat biologist Nickolay Hristov, of UNC's Center for Design Innovation and Winston-Salem State University, has developed an innovative technique for filming and visualizing bats and the caves they occupy. Some of the tools in his kit include a long-range laser scanner (useful for modelling bat cave morphology in 3D) and portable thermal cameras to capture bat-life when the lights are off.

Teaching genetics

Autori:

It is possible to teach genetics in such as way as to gain students' interest. Yes, but a different approach is needed. This is the opinion of Rosemary J.Redfield, who teaches genetics at the Department of Zoology at the Canadian University of British Columbia, as stated in an article published in Plos Biology in July. The paper proposes a new way of teaching basic genetics, more suitable for students of the 21st century.
