Premio Nobel per la Chimica 2009 all'indiano con cittadinanza inglese Venkatraman Ramakrishnan, dell' MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, di Cambridge, all'americano Thomas A. Steitz, della Yale University, di New Haven, e all'israeliana Ada E. Yonath, del Weizmann Institute of Science, di Rehovot, per i loro studi sulla struttura e la funzione dei ribosomi, in particolare dei ribosomi batterici

I ribosomi sono quegli organelli diffusi nella cellula, dove le informazione contenute nel codice genetico vengono "tradotte" e utilizzate per la biosintesi delle proteine. Per questo i ribosomi sono chiamati "fabbriche delle proteine". Le proteine, a loro volta, sono le macromolecole che caratterizzano la vita, assolvendo a un'infinità di funzioni. Prima fra tutte quella di enzimi, ovvero di molecole che accelerano le reazioni chimiche nella cellula. Ma sono proteine anche gli anticorpi, gli ormoni, il collagene, l'emoglobina.

I tre vincitori del premio Nobel 2009 si sono distinti nello studio fine della "fabbrica delle proteine", analizzando, mappando e collocando nello spazio tridimensionale le centinaia di migliaia di atomi di cui sono composti i ribosomi batterici. La ricerca è stata utile in particolare per lo studio degli antibiotici che possono bloccare i ribosomi nei batteri patogeni rendendoli, di fatto, innocui.

In recent days, Anthony (“Tony”) Fauci has once again become a prominent figure in the international media, and to some extent in Italy as well. As the physician-scientist who has played one of the leading roles in U.S. public health over the past several decades, he became known throughout the world during the darkest days of the COVID-19 pandemic. Having had the privilege and good fortune to work with him from 1986 to 1993, I would like to offer my personal account of the scientist and the man.
