Italian research as a leading standard to fight HIV/AIDS
Africa is not the most rapidly growing HIV epidemic region: it is Eastern Europe. Out of a total 2.2 millions people living with HIV in Europe, more than 60% of them are living in the East. Before 2002 this figure was stable, but in just seven years it has increased by two thirds.
Brain Drain: a fund to address italian researchers
Cariplo Foundation launches some initiative to improve the Italian research system attractiveness and the competitiveness of young researchers. Italian scientists are awarded with grants even at international level, but when they have to decide where to develop their business, they often choose to move abroad. On 287 grants awarded in 2013 by the ERC to young researchers, 17 are of Italian origin, but only 8 projects indicate an Italian research center as host institution. Italy is tenth in the standings exceeded among others by Belgium and Spain.
Cochrane and BMJ inquire Tamiflu and Relenza effectiveness
There is no good evidence about the effectiveness of Tamiflu (oseltamivir) and Relenza (zanamivir) for influenza prevention and treatment. This is the though claim made by Cochrane Collaboration and the British Medical Journal (BMJ), based on the extended systematic review they just published about the use of neuraminidase inhibitors against influenza.
EU project develops roadmap for cooperative health research
Ill health and disease do not stop at national boundaries, and neither should health research. Global health problems require global efforts.
Working across borders, sharing knowledge and resources, and solving common problems are important principles and a key strength of EU health research and innovation. The EU-LAC HEALTH project is a prime example. Launched in October 2011, this drive for better global health research cooperation is being coordinated by the Spanish National Institute of Health Carlos III.

As part of the European programme Horizon 2020, which has allocated € 70 billion for research and innovation, Sapienza Innovazione, a promoter of high tech companies born in 2006, and Management Innovation, a society founded in 2008 that works in innovation consulting, have recently set up a SME (Small and Medium Sizes Enterprises) help desk in support of SMEs that want to innovate.
