But behind the discovery of the Higgs boson there is one of the largest and most powerful machines ever built, which involves dozens of institutions, hundreds of researchers, substantial funding, years of study and a mass of data produced never seen so far: an example of Big Science.

L'8 ottobre 2013, l'Accademia Reale Svedese di Scienze ha assegnato il Premio Nobel per la Fisica a Peter Higgs e François Englert per aver contribuito a capire il meccanismo all'origine della massa delle particelle subatomiche, confermato sperimentalmente il 4 luglio 2012, dopo le osservazioni degli esperimenti ATLAS e CSM presso l'LHC di Ginevra.
Dietro la scoperta del bosone di Higgs c'è però una delle macchine più grandi e potenti mai costruite, che coinvolge decine di istituzioni, centinaia di ricercatori, ingenti finanziamenti, anni di studio e una mole di dati prodotti finora inedita: un esempio di Big Science.
