New case in Saudi Arabia

A case of pneumonia caused by a novel coronavirus, temporarily named nCov-EMC, has been confirmed by the Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The patient, who is now recovering and out of intensive care, is a man who has been hospitalized in Ryadh a few days ago, with symptoms of an acute respiratory syndrome. He has no significant travel history and, one week prior to disease onset, he reports having visited a farm.

Saudi health authorities reported that this case is not epidemiologically linked to the other two recent cases of SARS-like coronavirus infection, both related to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Europe votes on the new air quality directive

The European Parliament's vote (and subsequently the Council of Europe's) on the new European Directive on air quality is expected for September 13. This directive updates the allowed atmospheric pollutant limits, bringing them closer to those established by the WHO in 2021. Resistance to the new objectives, mainly coming from the industrial world and established economic interests in certain regions, makes the outcome of the vote uncertain. However, there are no serious scientific or political reasons to oppose or attempt to dilute the more ambitious limits proposed by the new directive.
