NIHMP conference: The health of everyone, without exception

Read time: 2 mins

The National Institute for Health, Migration and Poverty (NIHMP) is a public structure, under the Italian Ministry of Health control, which provides social and health care services to all citizens, both italians and foreigners.
Following its mission, NIHMP organizes at its headquarters in Rome the conference "The health of everyone, without exception", scheduled December 2th, 2014.

The conference, that will be introduced by the italian Health Minister Beatrice Lorenzin, will be focused on the most vulnerable population health, starting by the results of the White Paper on health inequalities. This is a document developed through a regional initiative and supported by 'NIHMP as well, which will report to the coordinator of the work Giuseppe Costa (University of Turin). But the conference will be primarily an opportunity to learn about the new strategy to guide the health equity policies, which the NIHMP is developing together with the Regions and other stakeholders.

"This is the first annual NIHMP conference and it also constitutes such an important opportunity to understand how public health is moving to tackle health inequalities and also to assist the weaker sections of society trough this historical era marked by several crisis," says Concetta Mirisola, the Institute's director: "We will exhibit the new Institute's projects, expeciallt the national Network for the health problems and social care in those fields related to poverty and migration, and the national epidemiological Observatory as well. The collaboration among all the actors of care and research both at central and local levels is a prerequisite to make a healthier, united and cohesive society. "

The conference will also shed light on the many misconceptions surrounding the presence of migrants in Italy, on their state of health and the full extent of the phenomenon.

Karen Hallberg, on peace and science

Karen Hallberg

In a world marked by wars and global crises, the new Secretary General of Pugwash tells us about the challenges of disarmament and the value of scientific dialogue for peace (photo: Karen Hallberg, source Wikipedia).

Pugwash is the name of a Canadian fishing village and a commitment to peace. In July 1957, at the height of the Cold War, twenty-two scientists gathered here for the first Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs. The group was led by the mathematician and philosopher Bertrand Russell, who, two years earlier on 9 July 1955, presented the Russell and Einstein Manifesto in London's Caxton Hall. In this manifesto, the philosopher and physicist (who died in April but had signed it) called on the world to renounce war.
