An event entitled 'Horizon 2020: An introduction' will be held on 12 November 2013 in Cambridge, UK. Horizon 2020, the EU's new funding programme for research and innovation will be launched at the end of 2013. With a budget of over EUR 70bn for the seven year period to 2020, it represents a significant source of support for research and innovation. This workshop will provide an overview of the new programme: its scope, budget, rules and procedures, as well as identifying the interest groups to watch. The workshop is specifically aimed at newcomers to EU research and innovation funding whether they are from industry, universities or local government.

Is Zika a lose-lose game for WHO?
Declaring an emergency is a dirty work, but someone has to do it. When facing a serious threat to global public health, even if complete evidence is lacking, someone has to take the responsibility to push the red button that activates a chain of coordinated actions (such as cooperation among states and research of vaccines). Choosing to do this, the risk of giving a false alarm is unavoidable. On the other side, one could decide to wait until something more is known, with the awareness that, in this way, it is possible to act when it is too late.
