Italy will join the ESS Project (European Spallation Source), the multidisciplinary research center, intented to be by far the most powerful neutron source in the world, almost 30 times brighter than the others, with capabilities that far exceed those of the SNS (Oak Ridge, USA), J-PARC (Japan) and the UK’s own ISIS facility. Italy will participate with the Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR), the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN), the National Research Council (CNR) and Elettra Synchrotron Trieste.
This partecipation is a strategic choice, because the ESS is going to be a great opportunity not only for the scientific research world - especcialy for physics, life sciences, energy, technology, environmental and cultural heritage - for but also for the entire hightech industries and a various basic and applied research fields that will contribute to the construction of the ESS.
The biggest european experimental physics project focused on the spallation will be constructed in Lundun, Sweden, with the supercomputer center of data based in Copenaghen, Danimarka, starting in 2014 for the nex ten years. It is a pan-European project, involving at least 17 states, with an expected financing budget of 1,84 bilion euros. Italy will contribute with 6% of the total, of which 80% will be dedicated to the the provision of machine parts.
