The best of Immunology in Milan

The XV International Congress of Immunology will be held in Milan, Italy, from August 22nd to August 27th, at the MiCo congress facility, in Piazzale Carlo Magno 1, organized by the International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) and the Italian Society for Immunology,
Clinical Immunology and Allergology (SIICA).

 At the event will be present about 5000 immunologists from 70 countries. Among 500 speakers there will be the main experts in this fields worldwide, including three Nobel Prizes: Peter C. Doherty and Rolf M. Zinkernagel, awarded in 1996 for their discoveries concerning the specificity of the cell mediated immune defence, and Jules A. Hoffmann, awarded in 2011 for his discoveries concerning the activation of innate immunity.
 

About 300 young scientists will be allowed to participate thanks to grants given either by the congress itself or by their national scientific societies. Fifty of them will come from Africa, supported by Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

The meeting will explore all fields of immunology, with emphasis on human immunology, translational and clinical immunology, and the potential preventive (vaccines) and therapeutic intervention derived from them. The development of immunology brought this discipline over
and above the mere study of organism’s defense, making it an across-the-board tool that allows to understand many different diseases, from allergies to tumors, and to act against them.

The most important results from basic research in this field will be discussed together with common clinical topics of great interest even for a non-specialist public: allergies, innate and acquired immunodeficiency like AIDS, autoimmune diseases from arthritis to
multiple sclerosis, vaccines against infections or as new approaches to fight cancer, tolerance towards transplantations and so on. New perspectives will emerge, like the connection between immune system and aging, or the role played by microbiome in longevity and pathogenesis.

The scientific program includes 12 Plenary Lectures, 10 Perspectives in Immunology Lectures, 40 lunchtime lectures and 150 seminars in thematic Symposia. The event will also propose 100 focused workshops, each with 6 speakers selected from accepted abstracts, 5 poster sessions, a late breaking session, and several industry-sponsored symposia and tutorials.

Scienceonthenet will follow the Congress with a dedicated scheduling that will include daily interviews and newsletters, and streaming coverage for the Opening Ceremony and all the Plenary Lectures.

Some of the leading participants to the meeting will be attending the opening press conference, which will be held on August 22nd, at 11 a.m., at the congress venue.

The Councillor for Job policies, Economic development, University and research of the City of Milan, Cristina Tajani will also participate to the press conference, in order to represent the city, emphasizing its vocation as a focal point for scientific research worldwide.
