Sarà pure più leggera della forma stagionale, come si continua a ripetere in Italia, ma i numeri della nuova influenza che vengono da oltre oceano sono tutt'altro che rassicuranti: Anne Schuchat, direttrice del National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases dei CDC di Atlanta ha dichiarato che tra settembre e i primi giorni di ottobre, negli Stati Uniti, sono deceduti a causa dell'influenza H1N1 43 bambini e ragazzi, mentre nel corso di un'intera stagione invernale, sulla base dei dati degli ultimi tre anni, ne soccombono una cifra variabile da 46 a 88. Le piccole vittime statunitensi, dall'inizio della pandemia, sono state 86, 11 nell'ultima settimana. Gli esperti sono inoltre sorpresi del fatto che la metà dei decessi registrati tra i più giovani dalla fine di agosto non si è verificata tra i più piccoli, teoricamente più indifesi, ma tra gli adolescenti.
